Siya Kolisi and Trevor Noah are two world-renowned icons from South Africa, and the Springbok captains have inspired their nation through their leadership and success on and off the field.
Meanwhile, Noah is a world-famous comedian, author, and Emmy Award-winning television host, making him one of the most famous people in the world.
Kolisi now joins a group of notable people who have cracked the TIME 100 list, and Noah penned a meaningful memorial message.
“South Africa's history cannot be separated from rugby. Nelson Mandela once offered rugby as an olive branch between the country's rival teams, so we take immense pride in this sport. It's like connective tissue.
“Siya Kolisi is right at the heart of it as captain of the national rugby team. He was the embodiment of hope at a time when many South Africans are finding it difficult to hold on to anything. Political strife, energy crisis. , through the impact of COVID-19, Siya has transformed rugby into more than just a sport. His multiple victories – victories for the country – mean a lot.
“Through his wisdom and humility, Siya taught us what a strong captain should be: one who serves and inspires those he leads. To lead a team in a white sport and be loved and revered by fans of all races is an immense accomplishment.
“Siya is a constant warrior on the field, but he is also a loving father, a loving husband, and a great friend. He has given so much to a country of 62 million people. I hope you enjoy it.”
Siya Kolisi is already above the game
In 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa and Caster Semenya participated, and in 2018, Noah himself appeared.
The book was edited by more than 50 contributors to American news magazines and was first published in 1999 as the result of discussions among American academics, politicians, and journalists.
It has now become a fun annual event.
Kolisi said on his social media page: “Being included in the 2024 #TIME100 list is an incredible honor and extremely humbling.”
“It is a great responsibility to work alongside people who dedicate their lives to enriching others.
“This recognition is not unique to me, but reflects the many individuals and communities that have poured into me and shaped me into the person I am and am becoming.”
