In 1947, the British Empire's response to demands for independence from the peoples of the Indian subcontinent, one of its most lucrative colonies, was a violent and deliberate tantrum.
In his original duty to civilize and modernize his subjects, the king imposed a final condition for their freedom. It is the separation of peoples who lived together for centuries (with varying degrees of war and peace along religious lines) before being colonized. The effects of the territorial partition of India and Pakistan continue to be felt to this day.
Nigar Alam was born in Pakistan, and her novel Under the Tamarind Tree is an ode to continuing this heritage. It's a complex legacy, and she weaves it into a story of generational secrets, class divisions, and a love of botany.
