A 40-year-old hiker died after falling in the Jonkershug Nature Reserve near Stellenbosch on Friday.
Wilderness Search and Rescue said the hiker and his partner had gone on a hike to Tweed Waterval (Second Waterfall) earlier in the day and were heading back down the trail to their car.
The man suddenly slipped off the mountain trail and fell about 40 meters.
Passing hikers then rushed down the trail and called emergency services.
Wilderness search and rescue teams from Cape Town and Stellenbosch, accompanied by Cape Wilderness Rangers and Stellenbosch Fire and Rescue, responded and hiked to find the downed hiker.
“Upon arrival at the scene, a small team rappelled down the cliff and discovered the patient. Unfortunately, the hiker was found dead. The body was placed on a stretcher and carefully It was pulled up to a hiking trail and transported five kilometers down.'' A pass was created and handed over to a SAPS member. ”
Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the man fell into the river.
The recovery mission ended early Saturday morning.
Mr Van Wyk said a coroner's report had been opened.
