American Grant Holloway officially claimed his 76th consecutive victory in the 60m hurdles at the Glasgow Arena on Saturday (2nd), meaning he became world indoor champion for the second consecutive year.
The three-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist matched his championship record of 7.29 seconds with a trademark performance of a perfect start, great transitions and a powerful finish. World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24. Race got inside him in the first two strides.
The silver medal went to the jubilant Lorenzo Simonelli, the only non-automatic qualifier, with an Italian record time of 7.43, while France's Juste Kwaou-Masei took bronze with a time of 7.47.
Jakub Szymanski set a Polish record with a score of 7.46 in the semi-finals, but was unable to repeat that level in the final, finishing fifth with a score of 7.53, just one thousandth of a second behind Spain's Enrique Llopis. Ta.
Holloway's compatriot Trey Cunningham also placed sixth with a score of 7.53.
“It was a bit of a mess this morning, but it’s a good time to come out of here and get a sub-7.3,” Holloway said.
“I'm happy to defend my title and let's see how the rest of the year goes. I'm looking forward to it.” I had a lot of fun here and accomplished what I wanted to do. It wasn't a record, but it was okay.
“I know I'm in good shape for the summer. This was my fifth world title so I'm happy to keep winning. I'm feeling really good and I'm looking forward to hitting again. I will prepare for it.”
Simonelli said, “I never imagined it would be like this. I came here wanting to go to the finals, and a silver medal is really crazy. It's impossible to beat Holloway, so it was a fight for second place.''
The two-time champion's winning streak dates back to 2014, when he took second place at the age of 16 in a high school tournament.
His winning time matched the world record he set in 2021, but later lowered it to 7.27 seconds.
The only thing missing from this typically frenetic performance was another world record.
Holloway had set yet another benchmark before the final, winning her semi-final in 7.32 seconds, the fastest 60m hurdles time in Britain.
But even after the field was recalled for an apparent false start that led to the disqualification of China's Zhu Shenglong, it felt like he still had a feeling of being an “escapist”. He shrugged his shoulders, spread his arms, and stomped his feet back to the block.
In the opening round of the semi-finals, Spain's Asiel Martínez was penalized and disqualified, but despite protests he ran the race and appeared to finish in first place.
Milan Trajković of Cyprus won the race in 7.53 seconds, while Michael Obasiei matched the Belgian record of 7.54 seconds, and Kwaou-Masei also matched that time.
Cunningham won the other semifinal with a time of 7.49.
