6th season of blown away I watched former Mamelodi Sundowns player Lerato Chabangu tell the story of how his house and furniture were auctioned off.
Chabangu recently trended on social media after an image of his emaciated figure was shared. The Tembisa native has often been vocal about how his reckless lifestyle has ruined his career.
Lerato Chabangu says she lost her home because of her ex-husband
When Chabangu moved to Gkebela in the Eastern Cape to join Chippa United, he was living with his partner in Boksburg, Johannesburg. The former footballer said he paid R1.5 million for the house. He had also purchased a house in another suburb for his family.
The former soccer player said his then-girlfriend tricked him into thinking the money he was sending her would go toward the mortgage.
Every month he would transfer money into her account, hoping she would pay the bills. But eventually he realized that she wasn't paying anything.
“I sent money to my madam’s house every month.” [his girlfriend’s] I thought she was paying the bill, but it turns out she wasn't.
“During physical education [now Gqebehra] I learned that my property is being auctioned. Everything I own, including furniture. ”
Family and friends say Chabangu was living a luxurious life when he dumped his long-term girlfriend for a woman who cheated on him.
When their relationship began, the former right-winger bought the new woman in his life a car worth R70,000. A few months later, she gave her car to her parents, who bought her a Mini Cooper worth R85,000. Their home is in Boksburg. It was worth R1.5 million.
How much Chabangu earned with Sandown and SuperSport
Chabangu joined Sundowns in 2005 at the age of 20 and enjoyed an illustrious football career.
“They are [Sundowns] They offered me R20,000 a month. And there is a sign-on fee. They paid me his R50,000. In the first season he will receive R35,000 if he plays 20 games. [sic],” He said.
In 2009, he left Sundowns for arch-rivals SuperSport United. At the time, the defending PSL champions were paying him R90,000 a month, according to his friends.
“When he joined SuperSport United, I think his salary was around R100. I don't know how much he was earning when he returned to Sundowns,” says his friend.
Chabangu added that his signing bonus when he returned to Sundowns in 2009 was around R1 million.
How his injury changed his life
Chabangu's financial woes began with an injury that nearly ended his career in the gym. As a result, Sundowns terminated his contract and missed out on participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Even though he was strapped for money, it didn't stop him from partying and spending money recklessly. As a result, he ended up using his investment to pay off his mortgage.
Chabangu thanked his lucky stars when he was given a second chance at life in the form of signing with The Dube Birds in 2011.
“There was an agreement that we would receive R20 000,” he said. “After playing about 50% of the game, [in the season] They gave me more money. It was R75,000. ”
As the money started coming in again, Chabangu returned to the party life.
When Maswaiswai were relegated, he joined Chippa United and moved to the Eastern Cape.
“They paid me R30,000,” he added.
