Applying for a South African smart ID card for 2024 has never been easier since the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) adopted digital technology. If you need to quickly apply for a smart ID card, here's what you need to do before wandering into a DHA branch and wasting everyone's time.

South Africa smart ID card application
The South African ID booklet remains a valid form of identification until the DHA declares otherwise. Nevertheless, new smart ID card applications will automatically be for new high-tech biometric cards. Old identification documents are easy to duplicate and copy.

Firstly, you must be over 16 years old and a South African citizen to apply. Her old green ID booklet (if you have one), driver's license, or passport will serve as identification. If she was born in another country, her ID or passport issued by the government of her birth country will also be accepted.

All South African smart ID card applications must be submitted with the following documents (if you have them):
- Green ID booklet.
- Birth certificate.
- Documents proving legal guardianship (in case of adoption).
- Parent ID.
- Death certificate of deceased parents.
- Proof of address (i.e. utility bill with name and address on it).
- Permanent resident certificate if born in a foreign country.
- If your ID is lost or stolen, a sworn and signed police affidavit and police case number.

If you're 16 years old and applying for a smart ID card for the first time, it's free. Otherwise, the cost is R140 If you are 16 years of age or older and want to replace your lost or stolen ID.
How to apply
- Visit the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) eHome website here.
- click Apply online.
- select Go to registration.
- Enter all the details such as name, ID number, passport or birth certificate number, date of birth, email address, and mobile number.
- Upload all required documents listed previously.
- Make EFT payments online. If you don't use digital banking, you can visit your bank in person to make a deposit.
- Once your payment has been confirmed, select the Home Office branch you would like to visit directly. This is to enable us to provide the biometric portion of the South African smart ID card application (fingerprint and ID photo).
