ICAR-Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Integrated Agriculture, Piplakoti, Motihari, today celebrated World Wetlands Day. This year this day was celebrated with the theme “Wetlands and Human Welfare”. The event aims to raise awareness, highlight the contribution of wetlands to health and food security, share agricultural solutions, and inspire action and partnerships for wetland conservation.
The day was celebrated under the chairmanship of Dr AK Singh, former Deputy Director General (NRM), Dr SD Singh, Additional Director General, Department of Inland Fisheries and Mr AK Srivastava, former Professor, LPM Department, Ranchi Veterinary College. Birsa Agril University Ranchi, Dr. KG Mandal, Director, Scientist.
Dr. Singh highlighted the importance of wetlands, possible threats, and their important role for ecosystems and human livelihoods. He also added the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, with particular emphasis on the protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems.
Dr. Mandal was briefed on the theme of the event. He identified three courses of action: stopping water pollution, global efforts to conserve and sustainably manage wetlands, and restoring wetlands at the local level.
World Wetlands Day, celebrated today every year from 2021, commemorates the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971 and highlights the critical role of wetlands in human prosperity and a healthy planet.
