Advocacy group Protect Our Democracy says the South African Electoral Commission (IEC) can learn lessons from the 2024 national elections.
Despite some administrative problems, the group found no significant instances of disruption, intimidation or violence and determined the elections to be largely free and fair.
“This overall decision is in line with other authoritative reports such as the Human Sciences Research Council's Election Satisfaction Survey. 'Protecting Our Democracy' calls on all political leaders to act within the constitution, accept the results of elections and put the people first,” spokesperson Moss Ntula said in a statement.
The IEC reported that KwaZulu-Natal had the highest voter turnout in the 2024 general election at 61%. More than 1.5 million votes were cast in the province, with over 36,000 votes invalidated.
The Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) received the highest support in the province with 45%.
Provincial Electoral Officer Ntomvihti Masinga said: “There are national, regional and provincial ballot papers and that is the number that we printed. The allocation per VD is based on 100% voter turnout, which never happens. The turnout was 61%, which is higher than the national average of 58%. So, KZN recorded the highest turnout.”
