The South African Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed that its leaderboard and website are back online after being suspended.
Despite these issues, the IEC has assured South Africa that there are no problems with the counting process.
According to its website, more than 55% of precincts have reported results, with the African National Congress (ANC) on 41%, the Democratic Alliance (DA) on 23%, Umkhonto we'Sizwe (MK) on almost 11% and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on 9%.
Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Mawethu Mossery addressed concerns about the integrity of the voting process. “We use paper ballots, it's a count, we collect all the paper ballots and we make a total so anyone can cross-reference it with individual polling stations and verify that what we've recorded is correct,” Mossery said.
“The municipal counting offices have political party liaison committees that monitor the compilation of the results, and they know what has come from the stations and what has been counted. The results are always there and are constantly being checked,” Mossery added.
