The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it will only agree to join the African National Congress' (ANC) proposed Government of National Unity (GNU) if the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) are excluded.
Yesterday, ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the party was seeking to form a national unity government with a broader opposition group.
The party set out strict conditions for political parties to join the pact.
The DA says it wants to hear details about how a government of national unity will be run at its next meeting with the ANC.
“The president didn't get very specific about what the characteristics of this unitary national government would be. We hope to get some more details from him and then the task of the negotiating team will be to take those details back to the federal government,” DA national spokesman Werner Horn said.
“And on Monday, Congress has to take a decision. But the current resolution of Congress will make it very difficult, if not impossible, for us to participate, even if it involves the three parties at all.”
