Independent candidate Anele Muda says ANC speaker Cyril Ramaphosa should first consult with South Africans about forming a Government of National Unity (GNU).
Mda's comments come after President Ramaphosa stated yesterday that the ANC would negotiate with various parties that meet certain criteria regarding the formation of the GNU.
Mda was speaking at a press conference in Johannesburg on Friday following the results of the 2024 general elections.
“If this is honest and he really cares about the people of South Africa, the current president, Mr Ramaphosa, must invite South Africans to contribute to the principles that define the pillars on which this GNU should be built. Then we will see that this is not just a political ploy by political parties to position themselves. Some political parties have declared themselves the ministries they will head. How selfish can they be?”
2024 Election | Anele Muda reflects on her performance:
The ANC says its proposed government of national unity aims to tackle the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality. The ANC opted for a government of national unity after losing its majority in an election for the first time since the end of apartheid 30 years ago.
The party leader, Cyril Ramaphosa, briefed reporters in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, on the results of a special meeting of the ANC national executive committee on coalition talks.
“The GNU approach takes into account the situation at this time in our country's history. The objective of a Government of National Unity is, first and foremost, to address the pressing problems that South Africans want solved. These issues include job creation, growing the economy so that it is inclusive, the high cost of living, service delivery, crime and corruption,” Ramaphosa said.
