A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) police officer was shot dead during a gunfight with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) outside his home in Dobsonville, Gauteng, on Saturday night.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Faradi Shuping said the deceased was the mother of a reckless driver who was being chased by police after failing to heed calls to stop.
“While on patrol, the officers allegedly spotted a vehicle driving recklessly and attempted to stop it,” Shuping said.
“The driver did not stop and police pursued him, but [the car] We stopped at a house on Moniza Street in Dobsonville. ”
The officer approached the driver and asked why he refused to stop.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of negligent driving and reckless driving, it was announced.
The deceased then came out of his home and got into an argument with the police officers.
“She allegedly told them she was going to get a gun…she entered the house and began firing at the officers,” he said.
Shuping said the woman died after police returned fire.
IPID is investigating this incident.
