Reflecting on his career, seasoned producer and entrepreneur Oscar 'Oskido' Mdlongwa says the establishment of his own record label, Karawa Jazzme, has been the highlight of his long career.
“There have been many highlights in my career, but I think the most defining moment was the establishment of Karawa Jazzme Records,” he said.
The industry veteran, affectionately known as Oskido, reflected on his long career in the media industry after being announced as the winner of the Chairman's Award at this year's South African Music Awards (Samas).
“I am extremely humbled and honored to receive this recognition. It reflects not only my work, but the incredible support and collaboration I have received throughout my career. From the artists we've worked with to DJs to industry experts, we've created something truly special together.”

Karawa Jazzme
Kalawa Jazmee was founded in the early '90s after a fierce competition between two record labels: Kalawa and Jazmee.
Kalawa was founded by Christos Katsaitis, Don Laka, Bruce “Dope” Sebitlo and Oskido, and Jazmee was founded by Jakarumba, Eugene Mojalefa, Mahoota and Mandla “Spikari”.

Christos eventually left the record label and in 2001, Oskido, Spikiri, Bruce, Mijoks and Mahuta formed Dangerous Combination Crew, operating as Karawa Jazzme Records, and Don Raka formed Bokune Music. did.
This independent label continues to protect the sound of South Africa's youth and has helped many young people establish their careers.
Black Coffee and DJ Tira began their careers in the music business when they were unknowns, licensing their music through Kalawa Jazmee and founding record labels Soulistic Records and Afrotainment, respectively.
“The aim was not just to create a label, but to build a platform for South African talent to shine. We have seen artists grow and become household names, and we want to help shape the sound of South African music, especially through kwaito. That was the moment I truly realized that we were making history,” said the modest Oskido.
“This award is a reminder that our contributions can have a lasting impact. We are grateful to have been able to help shape the future of South African music,” Oskido said. Ta.

Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said Oskido's contribution to the South African music industry cannot be overstated.
“His influence spans multiple generations, and his visionary leadership has not only created some of the most famous companies in our industry, but also ensured the sustainability of our creative economy. We are proud to award him the RiSA President's Award,” said Mr. Sibisi.

In the mid-2000s, Oskido co-founded Deejays Unite (DJU), a collective aimed at shaping the future of South African music, alongside industry titans Greg Maloka, DJ Fresh, Vinny Da Vinci and DJ Christos .
