KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomsa Dube-Ncube has called on political parties to prioritise the interests of residents when taking key decisions after the election.
Speaking in Durban after the South African Electoral Commission (IEC) announced the results of the provincial elections, Dube-Ncube emphasised the need for cooperation.
The Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) won in KwaZulu-Natal but did not have a majority, followed by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the African National Congress (ANC).
“Beyond the excitement of political activism, we need to put aside our political differences and work together to continue building our dream state. After Election Day is over and the votes are cast, life begins and that life has begun now,” Dube-Ncube said.
Meanwhile, several provinces are due to begin talks on a coalition government in the next two weeks. The ANC holds majorities in the North West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State and the Eastern Cape. The Democratic Alliance (DA) retains control in the Western Cape.
In KwaZulu-Natal, MK won 37 seats and needs to win five more from the coalition to take power. In the Northern Cape, the ANC won 15 seats, with other parties winning 15 in total, leaving the parliament in limbo. In Gauteng, the ANC has 28 seats, the DA 22, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) 11 and MK 8, making it difficult for a coalition to form a government.
The total number of seats in Parliament is 80.
