Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is due to announce his provincial cabinet today.
African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said it was unfortunate that both the ANC and the DA had been unable to reach an agreement over the allocation of posts in the Gauteng provincial assembly.
“The Gauteng Premier, Comrade Panyaza Lesufi, has concluded all negotiations and consultations and will announce the appointments of Executive Council members today, Wednesday 3 July 2024. The DA has been informed that if they are not joining the GPU they have until 14 hours today, Wednesday 3 July 2024 to make their announcement.”
Mbalula made the comments at a press conference at Luthuli House today.
The current impasse between the two parties stems from the DA proposing the ANC to receive four MEC posts, while the ANC is proposing three.
Mbalula said the ANC was unfortunately unable to meet the DA's demands.
“As we have indicated throughout the negotiations, we are unable to accept the DA's latest proposal. The DA is not the only party with which we are negotiating to form a provincial unity government.”
Meanwhile, the Gauteng Democratic Alliance says it will not be part of the executive of the Gauteng unity government. The provincial party says the ANC's offer is unfair and unreasonable. The Democratic Alliance says it will proudly fill the opposition caucus in the Gauteng provincial legislature.
