Expression of concern
Independent candidates have raised concerns over the security deposits charged by the Electoral Commission (IEC) to contest general elections. Faith Fatela, an independent candidate who has performed poorly, argues that the commission should stop charging high security deposits for independent candidates to contest.
Independent candidates had to pay a deposit of R20,000 to run for parliament and R15,000 to run for provincial assembly.
Fatela won 272 votes in Limpopo, the first time an independent candidate has stood in the election. Fatela says the playing field is not level.
