More than a year after losing her son, Keenan Forbes, better known as AKA, Lynn Forbes is opening up about the pain of losing a child.
The South African rapper's life was cut short by assassination, with CCTV footage circulating on social media showing him being shot directly in the head.
AKA died outside Wish restaurant in Durban on February 10th.
Lynn shared a throwback photo of herself with her two sons, captioned it with a lengthy comment reflecting on motherhood.
“When you have a child, your identity changes from woman to mother. From that moment on, you make a choice every day about whether to put the happiness and health of others above your own. As a mother, you always choose to do the best you can with what you have and what you know.”
“I choose to do the right thing, even when I'm not always sure what the right thing is… and I have to forgive myself time and time again for getting it all wrong and being flawed. In the end, I find peace in knowing that as a mother, I have always done and will continue to do what I believe is best.”
“Losing a child in any way is the greatest pain a mother can suffer. Your identity as a mother changes because what made you a mother is no longer whole, it is broken. You experience the death of identity. You no longer know who you are. The only thing that marks me as a mother is the overwhelming, unconditional love I have for my children. That love will remain in my heart forever,” she wrote.
Followers and fans flooded Lynn Forbes' post with words of comfort and emojis.
