Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said his players would be “angry” against Liverpool and called for them to “bring a big game over the line”.
On Thursday, five days after conceding a 99th-minute equalizer against Brentford, United conceded two goals in stoppage time to suffer a dramatic 4-3 defeat at Chelsea.
This result leaves them sixth in the standings until they meet Jurgen Klopp's title-chasing side on Sunday (15:30 Japan time).
“We have to step up and make better decisions,” Ten Hag said.
United's hopes of qualifying for next season's renewed Champions League are slim after dropping five points in the final stages of their last two league games.
But Ten Hag said: “We can play at a very high standard. We can compete with the best players in the Premier League and beat the best players. If we can do that, we can do the same across Europe. It can be done,” he added.
“We need to learn how to get over the line in big games.”
The top five teams in English football will qualify for Europe's elite club competition next season, with United trailing Tottenham in fifth place by nine points with eight games remaining, and Aston Villa in fourth place. There is a difference of 10 points.
Since Ten Hag took over in 2022, they have won both times they have faced Liverpool at Old Trafford. An exciting FA Cup quarter-final Last month, they finished with 4 wins and 3 losses.
And the United manager said he wants his players to use the disappointment they experienced at Chelsea when Cole Palmer scored in the 10th and 11th minutes of stoppage time to spur them on to victory over their arch-rivals.
“I have to recover quickly,” Dutchman Ten Hag said. “We have to turn this situation around. We are feeling positive and will look forward.
“We have to take in energy, but we get angry, we get angry. Anger can take a lot of energy away. That's the way we have to do it.”
