The singer said in her memoir that her relationship with her mother caused her “a great deal of pain and turmoil.”
Multi-award-winning American singer Mariah Carey is mourning the deaths of her mother and sister, who died on the same day over the weekend.
“I lost my mother last weekend and my heart is broken,” All I want for Christmas is you Monday singer.
“Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”
Carrie said she was happy to have been able to spend time with her mother in the week before her death and asked for privacy.
“We thank everyone for their love, support and for respecting our privacy during this difficult time.”
No details have been released about the cause of death of Carrie's mother, Patricia, 87.
The singer's sister, 63-year-old Allison Carey, had been in hospice care before her death, according to reports, New York newspaper The Times Union quoted friends as saying. The cause of her death was not disclosed.

A chilly relationship
In her memoirs, Mariah Carey Meaning In the album, released in 2020, the singer said her relationship with her mother had caused her “a lot of pain and confusion.”
Carey's mother was a singer and vocal coach, and she said their relationship was complicated by jealousy over Carey's success.
“[It] “Jealousy is a part of success, but it's especially painful when that person is your mother and it manifests at a young age,” she writes in her book.
“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It has never been black and white, but a rainbow of emotions.”
Carrie also writes, “Our relationship is a tangled rope of prickly emotions: pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, disappointment.”
“A complicated love connects my heart with my mother's.”
In the book, Carrie opened up about the sibling rivalry between her and Allison, saying she felt “mentally and physically safer not having any contact with Allison or her brother Morgan.”
Following the book's publication, Allison filed a lawsuit against her successful sister, seeking more than R17 million in damages.
