Following his death, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) announced that it was legally entitled to recover R475 million in fines from Mr Jooste's estate. The fine was imposed on Steinhoff days before his death for publishing misleading financial statements. Netwerk24 reported that Ingrid Jooste, 62, was named as his sole heir in Jooste's will, which was filed in the Grabou Magistrate's Court earlier this month. Jooste made a will four years ago.
He specified three firearms to be given to his wife: two rifles – a .22 Anschutz and a .22 Brno – and a 9mm Walther pistol. Network24 previously reported that Jooste committed suicide with his own 9mm pistol on March 21 in Hermanus.
The will includes eight cars: a Mercedes-Benz SL600 (2012 model), a Lexus LX 570 (2011), a Land Rover (2015), two Land Rover Defenders (2013 and 2016), and a Toyota Corolla (2009). Vehicles are also specified. , Volkswagen Van (2015), and Isuzu Bucky (2005). Netwerk24 reports that the vehicles are collectively worth more than R3 million.
However, the South African Reserve Bank had already seized five vehicles in 2022, including an Isuzu double-cab bakkie, a Mercedes-Benz SL600 and a Land Rover Defender. Ms Jooste's paintings, jewelery and firearms worth almost R800,000 were also frozen by the SARB, along with five properties in Stellenbosch.
Although not specified in the will, a family trust worth more than R1 billion was also frozen by the central bank in October 2022.
At the time of his death, Jooste had approximately R74,000 in his Capitec bank account. In addition, an Old Mutual superannuation worth approximately R1.6 million and two momentum policies worth R1 million were left in his will.
Loans to two individuals named Doretta (R697 000) and Karin van Heerden (R191 000) are also transferred to Ingrid Jooste.
His executor, Jean Pretorius of Cape Town-based Perpetual Trustee Services, has declared in writing that to his knowledge, Mr Jooste's estate is solvent. However, three creditors have been named: the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the SA Revenue Authority and the FSCA. The amount is not listed, it is simply classified as “disputed.”

In January last year, the JSE fined Jooste R15 million for publishing false and misleading financial statements and creating fake invoices worth R376 million. At the time of Jooste's death, he was fighting to pay a fine.
On Wednesday, the SARB seized R42.1 million in cash and R18 million in property from Ms Jooste's ex-girlfriend Berdine Odendaal, just days before her asset forfeiture was due to expire.
