African National Congress (ANC) vice-president Paul Mashatil said churches across South Africa could support the government's efforts to combat social ills such as drug abuse and gender-based violence.
Mr Mashatil visited Khayelitsha on Sunday ahead of his January 8 statement on the party's 113th anniversary program.
A commemorative ceremony will be held in Khayelitsha next weekend.
Mashatil said continued engagement with the church could help improve the quality of life for South Africans.
“We are also working with them on other social issues. As we know, in many communities, drug issues, gender-based violence, gender-based violence, which affect many young people, And people are suffering from unemployment. We think the church has a very big role to play in working with governments to address these challenges,” Mashatil explains.
Mr Mashatile said the national government was committed to addressing the issues faced by communities in the Western Cape.
“We recently saw an issue in the Western Cape where people were building their huts with flammable materials and their huts were burning. [Human Settlements] Deputy Minister [Tandi] Mahambelala spent much of the Christmas and New Year festive period touring the community, working with them to try to address these types of issues. ”
“Therefore, we will continue to work with them to address the issues they have previously raised with us. We want to be able to make a living,” the vice president added.
