African National Congress (ANC) Vice-President Paul Mashatil will deliver the party's message of support at the South African Communist Party's (SACP) fifth special party conference in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, later this morning.
This comes at a time when the SACP has vowed to eliminate the ANC in the 2026 local elections after deciding to field its own candidates.
Mashatil's participation in the SACP meeting does not appear to be an attempt to change the party's position on countering state power.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbulula said: “And even the ANC-SACP bilateral meeting in January does not seem to be able to convince the SACP otherwise, at least according to the general secretary.” .
SACP General Secretary Solly Mapaila said the move to campaign would encourage the reconstitution of the alliance that the SACP had been seeking for more than 20 years.
Mr Mapaila said the alliance was in this situation because of the weakness of the ANC leadership.
He argues that participating in elections independently will free him from years of abuse by some within the ANC.
Meanwhile, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the South African National Civic Organization (Sanco) will also deliver messages of support to parliament.
