“Call of Duty Modern Warfare”/Activision
Microsoft plans to release the next installment of its “Call of Duty” video games on a subscription service, rather than its long-standing approach of selling only a la carte, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
The plan is expected to be announced at the company's annual Xbox Showcase next month, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Microsoft did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.
The first-person shooter game developed by Activision Blizzard is one of the most successful entertainment properties of all time, with lifetime revenue exceeding $30 billion, according to data platform Statista.
WSJ reports that Activision has been releasing a new version of the game every year for years, and in recent years has sold an average of about 25 million copies for about $70 each.
Microsoft manages a subscription service called Game Pass that provides access to games from Xbox and other developers for a fee.
The company completed its $69 billion acquisition of Activision late last year.
