The Department of Education has responded to the recent controversy surrounding the inclusion of a question on South African sensation Skomota in a national examination paper.
Critics have raised doubts, as some argue that local entertainers are not a positive influence.
“For me it is assumed that all children know about skomota 😏… some parents will do anything to avoid exposing their children to skomota because they know there is nothing to learn from its behaviour. The Ministry of Education must do more!” wrote X user.
Speaking to Jimoja, National Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga questioned the authenticity of the exam questions.
“The DBE does not know if this is true or not as schools set their own exams for students below Grade 12. There are no national exams, they are internal exams so schools can do things like this for their own purposes,” Mhlanga said.
“It could easily be a manipulated document.”
“But we will check with our provincial colleagues to see if they know anything about the matter,” Mhlanga added.

Some parents do everything they can to avoid exposing their children to Oscomota because they know there is nothing to learn from their actions. The Ministry of Education needs to do more!— Mrs_Kat (@Kat4Kubs) June 10, 2024
