Umkhonto Wisizwe (MK Party) says former president Jacob Zuma's position as MK leader was not intended to make him president of South Africa. This comes as the party faces internal infighting after its founder Jabulani Khumalo called on the Electoral Commission to urgently remove Zuma from the face of the MK party.
Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Nderela said the dispute was a misunderstanding caused by other political parties who did not want the party to succeed in the May 29 elections.
He said Mr Zuma's position in the party would not lead to a position in government.
“President Zuma is retired and President Zuma has been president of this country before. He is not a power-hungry person. He is a selfless person. Now that traditional leaders, religious leaders and others have come to President Zuma and said, “The state of this country is no longer the same,'' there are people who are actually taking a stand against what is happening. For him, it was beneath you, we need a solution here.'' President Zuma, in his political genius, formed uMkhonto weSizwe and took it upon himself to lead them. Ta. We have taken a position and made it clear that just because you are the leader of Umkhonto Wisizwe does not necessarily mean that we will put you in a government position,” Zuma said. explains.
Meanwhile, supporters of the MK party have begun arriving at interfaith prayer services in Durban wearing party regalia.
It appears to be a prayer for peace in the run-up to the general election on May 29th.
