The seven-member Northern Cape Executive Council (MEC) was sworn in yesterday after Premier Zamani Sole downsized the provincial administration and merged several ministries.
The four ministries remain unchanged – Health, Education, Roads and Public Works, Finance, Economic Development and Tourism. There are no new faces in the executive branch. All MECs served in the sixth administration.
Malping Lekwene MEC returns to the Ministry of Health.
“Our biggest problem is nurses. We have to try to recruit nurses and also improve our own college. Let's run the college so that we can take in more nursing students in the next intake.”
The only young person on the Northern Cape executive committee remains provincial ANC youth federation chairperson Venus Brennies, who took over the leadership two years ago and now manages the province's finances.
Brennies said he plans to introduce programs aimed at improving the pace of service delivery.
“One of the things we do is a municipal program focused on helping municipalities with finance-related issues, from supply chains to how to improve audit results. We believe this will help them deliver services to their residents more quickly.”
