Novak Djokovic will leave the Australian Open as the No. 1 player in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, no matter what happens for the rest of the tournament.
Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev all started the season's first major tournament with a chance to leave Melbourne as world number one. However, Alcaraz's loss to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals ensured that Djokovic remained in first place.
According to the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, Djokovic has an unsurpassed 9,855 points, 600 points ahead of Alcaraz (9,255 points). The question is whether the Serbian will gain further advantage with a record-extending 11th Australian Open win.
Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings
player | Current point | Last | champion |
1) Novak Djokovic | 9,855 | 10,355 | 11,055 |
2) Carlos Alcaraz | 9,255 | – | – |
3) Daniil Medvedev | 8,265 | 8,765 | 9,465 |
4) Jannik Sinner | 7,110 | 7,610 | 8,310 |
Djokovic has a chance to lead by as much as 1,800 points if he can lift the trophy, depending on the results of the remaining events. If Medvedev wins his second major title and Djokovic loses to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals, world No. 1 Djokovic will lead Medvedev by just 390 points.
The 36-year-old Djokovic's current quest to reach the top began after last year's US Open. This year, he aims to win the Pepperstone Award for a record-extending ninth time at No. 1 in the ATP rankings.
There is a possibility of upheaval for the world No. 2. If Medvedev, a former world No. 1, wins the title, he will overtake Alcaraz for second place.
Sinner also has a chance to reach a career-high ranking of No. 3 in the world. If the Italian wins his first major title, he will overtake Medvedev.
Former world number two Zverev cannot move higher than fifth in the world with a win in Melbourne.
