Forty students from Penrith's Ullswater Community College will depart for South Africa in July to take part in the school's first girls-only sports tour, which has raised thousands of pounds.
The netballers and cheerleaders, from Years 9 to 12, will be based in Cape Town and will compete in multiple sporting matches as well as visiting schools in nearby deprived areas.
You can also enjoy once-in-a-lifetime activities such as safaris, whale watching, learning to surf, and visiting iconic locations such as Robben Island and Table Mountain.
The girls, accompanied by staff Karen Castle, Pam Smitties, Alicia Grainger and Lucy Monk, have received £16,500 in central funding and a further £3,000 individually to fund meals and kits. had to be collected.
They came up with all kinds of fundraising ideas, including a bake sale. Color run at school (half of the funds raised went to cancer research). Face painting; Christmas party. Netballers Olivia Beedie, Iris Turner and Grace Hall (all 14) spoke about what they hope to gain from the trip.
“It's a good cultural experience to meet diverse people and see how they live compared to us,” Olivia said. “It will also lead to better bonding with all the girls.”
Iris said: “I want to get away from my parents a little bit and be independent. I'm looking forward to surfing and swimming in the sea. It's going to be a completely different, once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Grace added: “It will give us new opportunities, something we won't be able to do again. It'll be fun to go with your friends.”
The girls compete in a number of netball matches and show off their cheerleading skills. The school's cheerleading team (known as the UCC Wolves) is the reigning national school champion and is being asked to share its expertise with many schools in the Cape Town area.
They will also participate in cheerleading competitions with other teams and provide demonstrations and instruction with elementary school students.
UCC girls are bringing in books and materials as part of their baggage allowance to help stock the new library.
