President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised residents of Delft in the Western Cape that more police will be deployed to the area to curb gang violence.
Prime Minister Ramaphosa made this commitment during a regional visit on Thursday, where the African National Congress (ANC) held a candlelight ceremony to highlight the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
The president's visit to the region will be part of events leading up to the ANC's birthday celebrations this Saturday.
He said, “Gangs and gang leaders are causing a lot of trouble here. The police chief has declared war on gangs. They are arresting gang leaders and I I'm glad to hear that.”
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa said that despite the ANC's declining electoral numbers, businessmen's appetite for funding has increased.
In the May 2024 election, the ANC's approval rating in a national election fell below 50% for the first time in 30 years.
Mr Ramaphosa said the party expected to raise enough funds to fund ANC activities.
“While we saw a decline in electoral votes, we're seeing a resurgence of interest and a resurgence of support in the business community, both black businesses and white businesses. So we're really pleased. We have anchor supporters,” he says.
