African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa said the ANC-led government was tackling the historic challenges of electricity and the municipality's debt to Eskom. He said they were working to make things right for the residents of Putadichaba.
Ramaphosa made the remarks at his party's Siyankoba rally in Kwakwa, eastern Free State, ahead of the May 29 general election.
“The power problems and challenges here are driven by a number of factors, one of which is non-payment of payments to Eskom, to which the municipality owes a large sum of approximately R5 billion. As a result of the broken governance and the corruption that led to it. All the things we're doing right and our employees get the message that we're going to make things right and they will make things right. I came to understand the responsibility and our job.”

Prime Minister Ramaphosa has reassured residents of Phutaditshaba, Kwakwa, that the government is working to resolve the water leak. In 2019, residents complained of prolonged water and electricity cuts, prompting a complete shutdown.
Mr Ramaphosa said the Minister of Water and Sanitation and his team were working to improve water infrastructure.
“The water issue in the region is a big issue that we have been calling out and Minister Senzo Mchunu and his department are working on a plan to ensure that the water issue in the region is resolved. The department understands and focuses on the water structure of our country and will continue to solve water problems here as well.”
The party president also expressed optimism that the party will win elections again as it celebrates its 30th anniversary of democracy. He said the first democratic elections were historic, paving the way to change the lives of many South Africans.
Mr Ramaphosa says he is encouraged by the number of people who continue to support the ANC.
Hundreds of ANC members and supporters hope the party will fulfill its promises after the election.
