Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has missed the third Test against England in Rajkot due to a family emergency.
On day two on Friday, the 37-year-old became the ninth man to reach 500 Test wickets.
“The health and well-being of the players and their loved ones is of paramount importance,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.
“BCCI sends its heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family.”
Two days on, England are 207-2 after the second innings, 238 runs behind India's 445.
On Friday, Ashwin scored 37 runs with the bat as England opener Zak Crawley took a top-edge sweep to reach the 500-wicket milestone.
He is the second Indian and fifth spin bowler to achieve the landmark.
Ashwin was also the batsman in question when India were given five penalty runs for running on the pitch.
If he does not return for the Tests, India will not be allowed a batting or bowling substitute, but a substitute fielder will be allowed.
“BCCI and the team extend their full support to Ashwin during this difficult time,” a BCCI statement said.
“The board and team will continue to provide the necessary support to Ashwin and will keep communication open to provide support as needed. Team India would like to extend our condolences to the fans and the media during this sensitive time. Thank you for your understanding and sympathy.”
The five-game series is currently tied at 1 win and 1 loss.
India are already without star batsman Virat Kohli, who bowed out of the series due to personal reasons.
