Rohit Sharma will lead India in the 2024 T20 World Cup. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah spoke to the media at an event in Rajkot today and said the same.
This will be the second time that Rohit will lead India in the T20 World Cup after 2022. In that tournament held in Australia, India lost to eventual champions England in the semi-finals. Rohit did not play a T20I after that and did not play a single T20I in 2023. However, he was recalled in January 2024 to lead the Indian team against Afghanistan in January. The move by the selectors seemed to indicate that Rohit was almost certain to take the lead in the World Cup to be held in June in the United States and West Indies. Shah confirmed the same today.
“The fact that he recently returned after a year away to star in the Afghanistan series clearly means he was meant to do what's next.” [lead in the T20 World Cup]” Shah said at an event to rename the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium as Niranjan Shah Cricket Stadium.
Under Rohit, India lost last year's ODI World Cup final at home, a few days after Suryakumar Yadav led the T20I team against Australia. Suryakumar also led India in the shortest format of the South African tournament in December, and Mumbai Indians announced that Hardik Pandya will take over the team captaincy from Rohit. Rohit then made his comeback against Afghanistan in January. After tormenting Ducks in his first two matches, he hit a record 121 not out in the third match, reaching 500 T20Is for the first time.
