Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first person to reach more than one billion followers on his social media platforms, and has thanked his passionate supporters.
“These are more than just numbers, they are testament to the passion, drive and love we share for the game and beyond,” Ronaldo said in a statement.
The former Real Madrid player, who is nearing the end of his career, said that throughout his career he has played for the people he loves.
“I've always played for my family and for you all, and now a billion of us are standing together.”
“You've been there for me through the good times and the bad. This journey has been ours and together we have proven that there is no limit to what we can achieve.”

Ronaldo criticised
During a recent episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the former Manchester United player criticised current United manager Erik ten Hag, not for the first time.
“I think Manchester needs to rebuild everything,” Ronaldo said.
“The manager says we can't win the league or the Champions League. The Manchester United manager can't say we're not going to fight to win the league or the Champions League.”
“You have to say in your mind, 'Listen, maybe we don't have the potential, but I can't say no. We're going to try. We have to try.'
