More South African soccer fans watched African Cup of Nations (Afcon) matches on SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation) than on SuperSport.
SABC Doubles Super Sports viewership
SABC Sportscaster, Zoliswa Zondo revealed More than 20 million viewers watched Afcon's match on SABC on X on Thursday, February 22, while more than 10 million viewers watched on SuperSport.
“A total of 21.8 million viewers watched Afcon on SABC compared to 10.2 million viewers on SuperSport. The semi-final between Bafana and Nigeria was the most watched match. It reached a whopping 5 million views on SABC 3,” she said.
Zondo added that the figures show the importance of having sports on free-to-air channels. If the SABC had not acquired the rights to broadcast the Afcon match, more than 20 million people would have been denied the privilege of watching the Bafana match.
Sowetan confirmed that the South African national football team became Afcon bronze medalists for the first time in 24 years.
@NtateKheisara: “If you have SuperSport, you have no idea how important this tweet is. I have DStv and was watching the game on SABC.”
@NamiGabos: “I'm not sure about this, but I noticed it. I have DStv and always choose SABC. The commentators are on another level even with their analysis. As for @TotalAFCON2023, @SABC_Sport It was one of a kind. Every moment was fun. The commentators were as knowledgeable as always.”
@BongiMbatha: “Possible double counting. Some people have DStv but decided to watch it on SABC for whatever reason, including language preference.”
