The Rhodes Trust has announced that the top four schools and their 9 affiliated schools will be selected in 2025, following long-standing concerns that applicants and winners remain “majority white” 30 years after the end of apartheid. Scholarship selection for past students at the school has been canceled.
British mining magnate Cecil John Rhodes, who was Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896, awards four Rhodes Scholarships each year to past students of the Western Bishop, Paul Luce Gymnasium, and the University of South Africa. This was stipulated in the will. After attending St. Andrew's College in Cape and Makhanda, he plans to study at Oxford University in England.
Over the past 10 years, LEAP 1, St Cyprian's, Herschel Girls' School, St George's Grammar School, Rhinesch Girls' High School, Bloemhof Girls' High School, Diocesan Girls' School, Sans Souci High School and Rustenburg Girls' High School were also eligible to apply .
