The National Joint Operational Intelligence Service (NATJOINTS) said it had stepped up police surveillance in Gauteng ahead of the presidential inauguration.
Traffic officers from Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg Metro Police Stations have also been deployed to all key locations.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lt. Gen. Thebelo Mushikiri, Chairman of NATJOINTS, expressed satisfaction that the security arrangements for the presidential inauguration are proving to be effective.
Mushikiri said today's arrangements were part of wider planning for national and state elections, which will be held with security alert remaining high.
“We have no concerns regarding preparations. I think I have to thank the entire security services. Incidents have been minimal so far during the elections. We are doing our best to coordinate properly and respond as quickly as possible if there are any incidents. … To give an example I can give, there is a person in prison who tried to test our security measures. He went to the authentication centre and was arrested as a foreigner who was not supposed to be there. So we are not counting on anything.”
