- NSRI assisted in the rescue of 22 fishermen in Table Bay on Saturday morning.
- Spokesman Craig Lambinon said a rescue team, including police and paramedics, responded to the capsized vessel at 10am on Saturday.
- One man was hospitalized with minor injuries.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) rescued 22 fishermen from a capsized boat in Table Bay on Saturday morning.
Spokesman Craig Lambinon said they received an alert on Friday about a 35-metre longline fishing vessel 30 nautical miles south-west of Cape Town harbour.
There were no signs of danger until 10am on Saturday due to changing sea conditions, he added.
A team comprising EMS, Maritime Border Management and SAPS Water Policing and Diving Service (WPDS) was then alerted.
“Around 10 a.m., there were reports that the situation was deteriorating due to changing sea conditions, increasing wind speed and sea swells, and NSRI decided to begin providing assistance,” Lambinon said.
“NSRI Hout Bay Rescue Vessel Nadine Gordimer and NSRI Table Bay Rescue Vessel DHL Deliverer have been launched with water pumps. Additional water pumps have been delivered to NSRI Hout Bay by the crew of NSRI Simon's Town.”
Lambinon added that by the time rescue teams arrived on the scene, the ship was already submerged and the crew gave up for a life raft. He said NSRI doctors treated one man for minor injuries, but his condition was stable and he was hospitalized.
Lambinon added that the ship completely capsized shortly after the rescue.
“At this difficult time, our hearts go out to the 22 fishermen who lost their lives, their families, and the owners of the fishing companies. But we also hope that they will soon return to the sea.” We are confident that the authorities are assessing the environmental impact of the maritime accident.'' ”
