Leeds United secured victory in the Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough, ending Sheffield Wednesday's four-game winning streak and moving into second place in the Championship.
Patrick Bamford put the visitors ahead just before half-time when he smashed Junior Firpo's shot into the far post.
Leeds' quick attack led to Wilfried Gnont's shot, which once again forced the Owls defense to catch up and score Leeds' second goal.
Wednesday was a difficult night as they could barely react after Bamford's opener and were unable to maintain their recent form and get out of the drop zone.
Victory for Leeds means they move into second place, one point ahead of the Tractor Boys, who travel to Cardiff on Saturday, and leapfrogging Ipswich Town.
However, the hosts' winning streak has come to an end and they remain tied in 23rd place on points with Stoke and Huddersfield in a fierce battle to remain in the Championship.
Wednesday could have taken an early lead when Anthony Musaba converted a corner from Marvin Johnson, but Mousaba would have pushed home had it not been for a superb save from Leeds keeper Illan Meslier.
Leeds came close to hitting back twice through Georginio Rutter. The first time was when he tried to lob a ball at Wednesday's keeper James Beadle, and the other time when he aimed it at the top of the net.
Four minutes were added to the first half after a stoppage of play where Joe Rodon and Firpo collided, but Bamford's seventh goal in 10 league games, as Akin Famewo was unable to pick up the ball, was a positive result for Bamford. This extra time was advantageous for Leeds, as they were able to save the ball. In 2024.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Leeds doubled their advantage when Meslier took a free-kick up the field and eventually Rutter played a through ball to Gnont, who easily scored.
The visitors should have extended their lead further after the restart as Crisencio Somerville forced a quick save from Beadle, but they held out a decisive win against their Yorkshire rivals.
