Tributes poured in for former Kaizer Chiefs star Siphiwe Mkhonza, who died aged 44 on Tuesday.
Mkonza, who played for Bafana Bafana as well as a number of local teams during his playing days, retired in 2012 and has recently become a popular football analyst.
Siphiwe Mkonza's family released the following statement, confirming that his death was the result of an ongoing battle with a kidney infection.
“The family of former Golden Arrows FC and Kaizer Chiefs defender Siphiwe Mkhonza can confirm that he sadly passed away at his home early this morning,” the family said in a statement.
“Mr Mkonza, popularly known as Dr Mnandi, has been battling kidney infections for a long time.
“He was admitted to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.” [Johannesburg Academic Hospital] He showed signs of recovery and was discharged from the hospital a month ago.
“Mr Mkonza is being cared for by his girlfriend and mother of his three children, Nondumiso Masengemi, at their Roodepoort home.
“The family would like to thank his former employers and colleagues at the SABC, his fellow footballing legends from his stable and his friends for their support during his illness.
“Muhonza is survived by his children, his father Joseph 'Sukeshe Keshe' Muhonza, his mother Findile Muhonza, and his younger brother. The family will be in touch with details regarding funeral arrangements.”
Siphiwe Mkhonza was a very popular person.
Following the news of his death, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gigi Kodwa said: He also had a great perspective on the game as an analyst. He is very saddened by the passing of Mr Mkonza. My thoughts and prayers are with the Mkonza family and the South African football fraternity. ”

Chiefs posted a message of comfort to Mkonza on social media platform X. “Kaizer Chiefs is deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Siphiwe Mkonza. 'Dr. Mnandi' left a legacy of service to the club. The entire Kaizer Chiefs family joins his loved ones in mourning. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We pray for them strength and comfort. May his soul rest in eternal peace. ”
