A South African group called Progressive Force has written a letter to the Miss Universe organization calling for Chidinma Adesina to be disqualified.
The 23-year-old previously competed in Miss South Africa, but announced her withdrawal after a petition was launched calling for her mother to be disqualified due to identity fraud.
On Tuesday, the Home Office announced it would cancel the South African identity cards and travel documents of Adesina and her mother.
The group launched a petition on Wednesday calling for the disqualification of Chidinma, who traveled to Mexico for the prestigious competition.
“As the Progressive Army of South Africa, we write this letter on behalf of all those who stand for justice and urge us as an organization to reconsider the Miss Universe contestant, Miss Nigeria Universe, and if possible to replace her. We petition to cancel the entry,” the petition reads. read.
The letter, written by the South African Progressive Army on behalf of citizens demanding justice, calls on the Miss Universe organization to disqualify Ms Adesina from the pageant. Activists say allowing her to participate would undermine the contest's reputation for integrity and fair competition. They argue that Adesina's involvement will tarnish the prestigious Miss Universe brand, which has long prided itself on promoting positive role models for women around the world.
“We do not want to see the good image of this pageant tarnished because of a contestant whose mother was convicted of stealing the identity of an innocent citizen,” the letter said. It stressed that participation could not only damage Nigeria's reputation but also damage its reputation. An image of Africa seen on a global scale.
