President Cyril Ramaphosa has come under fire following his recent speech regarding his meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In his speech, President Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of strengthening the trade partnership between South Africa and Nigeria and expressed his enthusiasm for seeing Nigerian products on South African shelves.
“We look forward to seeing more Nigerian companies invest in South Africa. In fact, we want to see Nigerian products on the shelves of South African stores. Investments that include South Africa We are encouraged by the actions being taken under your leadership to further strengthen and promote Nigeria’s business environment for home security,” Ramaphosa said.
Additionally, President Ramaphosa announced plans to introduce a simplified five-year multiple entry visa for Nigerian tourists, eliminating the need to submit a passport when applying for a visa.
However, following these announcements, many South Africans expressed their displeasure with President Ramaphosa's decisions.
One X (former Twitter) user wrote: “Giving visa-free entry to millions of Nigerians is an act of war against the South African people!” Africans, people of colour, Indians and white South Africans must all resist this with all their might. ”
Another user said: “Biggest disappointment ever with Cyril Ramaphosa. We had a lot of faith in him and he ended up bringing out the worst in South Africa. It's clear that South Africans don't want anything to do with Nigerians, but you're showing us that you don't care about our opinion. Guys, they need to punish the ANC in 2026. I don't listen to you.”
