Toyota will overtake BMW as the most searched car brand in South Africa in 2023 for the second year in a row.
This is backed up by the most searched cars on the market comparison report for 2023, which also reveals that Toyota continues to hold the top spot internationally.
This study examines 155 countries' worth of online car searches to determine which brands are the most well-known worldwide.
For four years to 2022, BMW was South Africa's leading brand. However, Toyota overtook this position in 2022, and BMW returned to second place in 2023.

When it comes to the most searched car brands in the country, Volkswagen comes in third place.
Toyota topped the world rankings for the fourth year in a row, with Elon Musk's Tesla in second place.
Compare the Market reported that “Tesla's stunning comeback has narrowed Toyota's lead from 69 countries in 2022 to 64 countries in 2023.”
Tesla narrowly surpassed BMW, the top brand in 26 countries. Tesla is the most searched brand in 29 countries.
Mercedes-Benz, which finished third last time, missed out on the podium and finished fifth out of six countries.
In 2023, Audi ranked fourth overall and was the top brand in seven countries.

Compare the Market and AutoTrader data on South Africa's most popular car brands shows a strong correlation.
In August 2023, the latest medium-term automotive industry report was published by the used car advertising platform. This report examines website search volume to determine the most popular brands and models.
Based on AutoTrader data, the top three brands also included Toyota, BMW, and Volkswagen. However, these are not in the same order as the Compare the Market report.
On AutoTrader, the most searched brand is Volkswagen, followed by BMW and Toyota.
The top 10 models searched by South Africans are also listed by used car advertising companies.
The top 10 models included two BMWs (1 Series and 3 Series) and two Toyotas (Hilux and Fortuner).
Meanwhile, the top three cars on AutoTrader are Volkswagen models. Below is the complete list.
