Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gigi Kodwa has been arrested and is due to appear in court in Palm Ridge. He appeared in the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday in connection with allegations that he accepted a R1.6 million bribe.
Two independent police sources told News24 that Kodwa was arrested on Tuesday morning.
Hawks Gauteng spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale was approached for comment but had not responded at the time of going to press.
The charges against Kodwa are part of an investigation into a contract worth more than R460 million awarded by the City of Johannesburg to EOH Holdings in 2016. The company was hired to upgrade and maintain the metro's software systems.
News24 previously reported that the Zondo commission found Kodwa was involved in questionable dealings with former EOH director Jehan McKay.
Between February 2014 and April 2015, EOH entities and Mackay allegedly paid approximately R1.6 million in cash to Kodwa, who benefited from luxury accommodation, loans and other perks.
He was described as being “indebted” to MacKay.
More to come later.
