A British surgeon has performed the country's first surgery using Apple's Vision Pro headset. TechSpot reports: During a recent operation to repair a patient's spine at London's private Cromwell Hospital, a surgical nurse working alongside a surgeon used Vision Pro to prepare, track the procedure, and select the appropriate tools. The Daily Mail reported. This was the first surgery in the UK where the Vision Pro was used. The software running on Apple's headset during surgery comes from the US company eXeX, which has created a similar program for Microsoft's HoloLens. Nurses and technicians will have holographic, touch-free access to surgical equipment and procedure guides from within the sterile area of the operating room, according to a press release. The software tracks each step of the surgery and can also measure how well the surgery went compared to previous surgeries performed by other surgeons.
“This eliminates human error and eliminates guesswork,” said Suvi Barho, head scrub nurse at London Independent Hospital. “It gives you confidence in your surgery.'' This is the first time the Vision Pro has been used in a UK surgery, but the device was first used in an operating room last month, just three days after its launch. It was used by a world-renowned neurosurgeon living in Orlando. Robert Masson wore it during several spinal reconstruction surgeries. “We are entering a new era in surgery. For the first time, our surgical teams are leveraging the power of visual holographic guidance and maps to improve the visibility of each surgery for each surgical team and all specialties. I improved my spatial and temporal orientation,” Masson said.
