In the 2024 QS Subject Rankings, 19 UNSW subjects are ranked in the top 50 in the world and 10 are ranked first in Australia.
UNSW Sydney has been ranked among the world's top universities in 47 subjects in the 2024 QS World University Rankings (by subject). Six UNSW subjects are ranked in the world's top 20 and 19 are ranked in the top 50.
Minerals and Mining Engineering maintained its position as the top-ranked subject at UNSW, ranking third in the world, an improvement from fourth place in 2023. This is the eighth consecutive year we have been in the top 10, making us the best performing department at UNSW.
UNSW ranks first in Australia for 10 civil and structural engineering subjects, up from five in 2023. electrical and electronic engineering; mechanical, aeronautical, and manufacturing engineering; Materials Science; Mathematics; Accounting & Finance; Business & Management; Marketing; and tied for 1st place in Statistics & Operations Research and Performing Arts.

UNSW Vice-Chancellor for Research, Professor Dane McKamey, said the university's success demonstrated high quality research across a wide range of subject areas.
“This year's results also reflect our strong global reputation among employers and the academic community,” Professor McKamey said.
“This reputation is built on our efforts to develop skilled graduates who can develop new knowledge and use that knowledge to impact the most important challenges facing society.”

Published annually since 2011, the global QS subject rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research citations. The 2024 league table ranked 1,559 institutions across 55 subjects in five broad subject areas.
The rankings aim to help prospective students identify world-leading schools in their chosen field, and the list of subjects is expanded each year in response to high demand for subject-level comparisons.
