American Teofimo Lopez defended his WBO world light welterweight title with a controversial unanimous points victory over compatriot Jamaine Ortiz in Las Vegas.
Lopez, 26, appeared to be outboxed for 12 rounds as two judges scored it 115-113, with a highly debatable scorecard of 117-111.
The decision was met with boos from fans inside Michelob Ultra Arena.
“You can boo all you want,” Lopez said, directing a homophobic slur at the crowd.
He called up U.S. unified welterweight champion Terrence Crawford for a catchweight fight.
“I'm here, I'm ready. I'm hungry, I'm younger, I'm prettier,” he said.
Nimble and elusive, Ortiz fought in a southpaw stance and used his reach advantage and quick feet to trouble Lopez.
Ortiz, 27, circled around the ring on his back foot while Lopez struggled to find any real rhythm.
“I stuck to the game plan, listened to my corner, listened to my team. I thought we were winning,” Ortiz said.
“I think I won the fight. What can I say? He couldn't hit me. I was letting him miss all night. 117-111 is ridiculous.”
But Lopez, a two-division world champion, accused his opponent of fighting too defensively.
“We cannot for one moment claim that people and fighters do not want to come to fight,” Lopez said.
The below-average performance continues the trend of Lopez's unpredictable career.
He recorded the best win of his career in 2020 when he defeated unified lightweight champion Vasily Lomachenko, but suffered a surprise loss to George Kambosos Jr. the following year.
In June 2023, Lopez suffered the first loss of his career to Scotsman Josh Taylor to win the light welterweight title.
