Former president Thabo Mbeki said the people of KwaZulu-Natal would listen to the ANC's campaign and vote for the party.
He was speaking at Hero's Acre in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday and laid flowers at the graves of veterans Moses Mabhida and Johnny Makatini as part of his campaign efforts in the run-up to the May 29 elections.
The former president confirmed in March that he would campaign for the ANC after months of speculation about his involvement. Mr Mbeki said at the time that it was his “duty” to donate to his party.
On Saturday he said: “We came here to present our manifesto. [on 24 February 2024] at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. This launch is a promise to our people and we must do everything we can to deliver on it,” Mbeki said.
He continued: “In my opinion, the people of this province will listen to us and hopefully believe that we are not talking about Inganekwane.” [fairy tales] And believe us. ”
Mr Mbeki said that just as he was calling on people to vote for the ANC, he was also urging the party to respond to the needs of the people.
“We have to ensure their movement. [Mabhida and Makatini] He led everything and sacrificed everything to fulfill his promise to his people. That is our obligation to them,” Mbeki said.
In KwaZulu-Natal, there is a fierce battle between the ANC and the Inkatha Freedom Party, closely followed by the newly formed Umkhonto Wisizwe Party.
Mr Mbeki's election campaign coincided with the Democratic Alliance's (DA) last rally on the theme of 'Save KZN', showing that it is not giving up on the race in the state.
“For the first time in 30 years, the ANC will lose its majority both nationally and here in KZN. And they won't just lose, they will lose badly. The people of this province will not be blind. No,” said DA leader John Steenhuisen.
