An ode to the women in his life
The title of the documentary doubles as a message to encourage others to “rise up” from any situation or difficulty, but most importantly, the title is also the English meaning of Kolisi's mother's name, Pakama, and Kolisi pays tribute to his mother through the message of this documentary.
“I've been surrounded by strong women who have played very important roles in my life,” Kolisi said in an interview.
“That’s actually the story of my life: I was raised by my grandmother, then my aunt looked after me, and then I had a relationship with my mother near the end of her life.
“My wife Rachel has also been a pillar of our family. At times when I don't believe in myself, when the world attacks me, when people say I'm a quota or just a political leader, I reach a place where people don't see.
“I've reached a dark place where I've started to question everything, who I am and what I believe in, but she's always been that voice telling me, 'You are enough. You are good enough. You are here for a reason.' I don't think I would be where I am today without her.”
