The Springboks are scheduled to gather for a two-day conditioning camp on March 5th and 6th, with 16 uncapped players forming part of a larger 43-man squad.
South Africa begin their Test season in June against Wales, followed by two Tests against Ireland and then a one-off match against Portugal.
Realistically, the match against Portugal will probably be the first time the “newcomers'' who have made a good impression at the training camp and on the domestic stage will earn their first Springbok caps.
With this in mind, we believe these players have the most to gain from conditioning camp.
Sanele Nohamba
As previously reported, the first Test of the year against Wales will be played with Nohamba at fly-half if the Stormers advance to the URC, especially if Stormers stars Manny Livbok and Damian Willemse are unavailable for the Test match. This could be an opportunity to be thrown into the mix. Last. Remarkably, Leicester Tigers are also under no obligation to release Handre Pollard for the June games.
But even if the Springboks end up fielding all of these players, Nohamba's conditioning camp should not exclude his diminutive size from being tested, especially as he boasts the versatility to play as well. This will be a great opportunity to prove that. At scrum half.
Cameron Hanekom
With Duane Vermeulen retiring and Evan Roos likely moving down the order, the Bulls' loose forward has a big opportunity. Cameron Hanekom To make a big impression.
The youngster seems to have all the potential to appeal to a coach like Rassie Erasmus. Erasmus was unafraid to back the 'warrior' he felt could be a future Springbok.
Neethling Fouche
The Stormers' prop should also be ready for his Test debut this year, given that the Springboks need to start building more depth at prop.
Fouche is now 31 years old and has earned a real reputation as a veteran front rower who has absorbed a lot of knowledge from the likes of Frans Malherbe.
