South African superstar Tyra has officially revealed her identity after months of debate on social media.
The Grammy Award winner has trended on social media multiple times due to discussions about her race.
Some claim she is black, others that she is a person of color.
This Thursday night, the creator of the hit song “The Water” took to social media to set the record straight and put an end to the controversy.
“I have never denied my blackness. I don't know where it comes from… I am a mix of Black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/Indian and Coloured,” she wrote.
Tyra said she is classified as coloured in South Africa but black in other parts of the world.
“In South Carolina I am classified as a colored woman, but everywhere else I am classified as a black woman.”
“Race is classified differently in different parts of the world.”
“I understand the weight of the word Coloured outside of South Africa and have no desire to be identified as Coloured outside of South Africa by anyone who is uncomfortable doing so. However, as I conclude this conversation, I am also a South African Coloured and a black woman,” she wrote.
“As a woman who loves culture. That or not… that said, ASAMBEE,” she concludes her note.
Due to people's reactions to the statement made, Tyla has been trending on social media.
